The skill our guide lacked was reframing. Simply put, it's the ability to explain a situation in a way that:
📌 Makes it understandable
📌 Extracts lessons, highlighting errors and suggesting future actions
📌 Restores emotional safety for further client engagements (or employee work, if we're talking about a business context), as silence creates anxiety and other unpleasant vibes in the team.
Newbie managers often struggle with reframing for their teams. For instance, oops incident occurred in the department, a mistake was made, and negative feedback was received.
An experienced leader might say: "Guys, we messed up here and here. We accept the feedback, it's a work situation, nothing to worry about, we'll fix it like this." Or "Let's think together about how we'll fix it."
What would an emotionally immature leader do? Blame the team. Blame themselves. Scold the higher-ups, saying they're tyrants and bloodsuckers, look what they want. Dwell on the negative feedback received with the team, sometimes with tears and complaints about their difficult role as a leader. Assert that the company is toxic, that the team was treated poorly, and they, as a leader, are protecting the team with their chest.
What prevents managers from developing reframing skills? Definitely not intellectual difficulties. Typically, these are psychological reasons:
✂️ Fear of rejection and the desire to be good, loved, and significant, stimulated by it. As a result, people mix relationships with "buddy-ness". I purposefully use this term because essentially it's neither friendship nor professional relationships.
✂️ Lack of skill to contain their emotions (= noticing them, safely storing them until there's a suitable context for their processing). This is the most important emotional self-regulation technique. Without it, it's a bit early to become leaders.
✂️ Vulnerable self-esteem, narcissistic adaptation. When any criticism automatically means "I'm not good enough", "I'm rejected" — thus the ability to cope with negative contexts and, even more so, clarify them to others, decreases.
The focus here is this: the leader believes that if they "befriend" the team, dumping all their problems on them, they'll trust more and work well. In practice, it's such leaders that employees quickly become disillusioned with and leave (often under the guise of "I have nowhere to grow here"). Because the main thing they don't do is create emotional safety.
So the conclusion here is this: if I want to grow with management/take on real responsible projects — then I'm improving my emotional maturity. This is it.

Yesterday, during a diving trip, a rather unpleasant incident occurred, which, however, illustrates very well the top skill I consider essential for leaders and why.
Most leaders in their teams I've changed/moved to linear roles precisely because of the lack of this skill.
Yesterday, we encountered a very strong current (which is not unusual for us in general: if you want to see sharks and mantas, befriend the currents). The difference was that due to incorrectly planned dive by the guide and various small mistakes at the start, we found ourselves trapped between two strong currents in a triangle. For about 20 minutes, we actively kicked against the current, trying to get out of there - and in the end, we had no choice but to surface.
As we got back on the boat, we were completely disoriented and quite battered.
The situation itself, while not entirely common, can happen - any experienced diver understands that a dive can end at any moment, for various reasons. And everyone makes mistakes.
Only after we got out of the water, the guide immediately said, "I won't take money from you for this dive! It's my mistake!"
But then something strange happened.
When we got on the boat, she distanced herself from us, began to frantically type on her phone. After about 20 minutes, the other guides surfaced, and she emotionally recounted something to them all the way back to the hotel, waving her hands. All this happened on the other deck, far from us.
Our group was puzzled - would they explain anything to us at all? In the end, I approached her, asked if everything was okay with her and what happened.
This allowed me to piece together the picture of what had happened and tell the rest of the less experienced divers in our group what had occurred.
📝 Now, before I offer my version, here's a question for you: what was the leadership mistake of the guide on the boat? What one skill did she lack for adequate management of the situation?

Well, I’m not saying you should go and fight with every single colleague who doesn’t agree with your opinion. But, don’t let them steal your wind, it’s time to speak out! Be respectful and say out loud when you have another point of view. Yes, it might lead to a discussion and you might have to stand out for your opinion, but it’s ok. Healthy discussion can foster collaboration, innovation, and stronger relationships.
3️⃣ Curiosity 🕵️♂️
Have you ever found yourself bothering your colleague by asking too many questions? If your answer is “Sometimes”, then this is a kind reminder for you that this level of curiosity might lead you to overstep personal or professional boundaries. Proper communication at work is essential even if you’re working in a super small office full of friends and family. “Even” or “especially” 🤔
4️⃣ Resistance to change 🔄
