안녕하세요! Second attempt to move to South Korea. This time it's going much easier, probably because housing, food, communication culture (and the absence of English, for example) among locals, and the cities are no longer new but rather familiar. And after six months of studying Japanese, other languages don't seem as difficult as before (except Chinese), including listening comprehension. This time, Svetlana Tsoy and I even have a checklist of things to explore before settling here. It seems that after two years of living abroad, we've become better at choosing where to live and what we need for a comfortable life. For example, one of the items on the checklist is to find a community (of at least 30 people) with whom we can meet for beer/tea/soju/coffee and discuss product management, design, and startups. It's been tough so far, but I hope LinkedIn will help us get into the scene. If there is one, because it hasn't been noticed yet (the GDG community has fewer than 100 people...). Although something tells me that the rule will work here: if you want to find a community, create it yourself. The plan for the next 2-3 months is to explore the country and understand if we want to settle here for an extended period. To be honest, I've really missed the local food, nature, climate, cafes, and restaurants, and the coffee culture here is just top-notch. And in a month, I'm flying to Japan for 6 weeks to study Japanese, eat and drink 😃, and considering the schedule, I'll be a salary man because the schedule will be packed. If anyone is interested in anything about Korea, feel free to write, I'll share what I know. In the photo is Gwangalli Beach (광안리해수욕장).

Rely on facts and data when planning, not just generating features. #productmistakes _____ In early January, I had a call with the client to challenge their annual planning and assist with prioritization. During the call, the client presented key tasks for the upcoming year. As we began to dissect them, it became evident that they were not backed by facts and data. Without this information, it is challenging to move on to prioritization and planning. _____ It is explained below why initial data (inputs) is crucial and what to do with it. ↓ Lack of data and facts for situations During the call, they gave me a demo of a planning placeholder document, where tasks were formulated as follows: ⁃ "Automate request processing," ⁃ "Create training program X," ⁃ "Improve user onboarding." These are just a few examples, there were about two dozen tasks covering all company directions. I noticed that in 90% of the tasks, there were no specified facts: metrics, feedback, incidents, nothing. Interestingly, with some clarity, this information was in the client's mind. _____ What are the risks and challenges when skipping data collection and going straight to features, and what's the appeal? Risks: wasting money and time because priorities are set incorrectly, and unnecessary work is done. Challenge: it is challenging to prioritize tasks qualitatively without metrics, incidents, facts, root causes, and consequences — and, in my opinion, it doesn't make much sense. Appeal: it's always interesting to come up with something and immediately start working on it 🙂 _____ What to do to gather a proper set of initial data for planning? The necessary step is to outline situations in your business/product/whatever-you-do and supplement them with data and specifics. Situations can be outlined in a simple format: ⁃ "23% of users use feature A in product B after onboarding," ⁃ "Requests have tripled (from 50 to 150), and the team can't process them in time," ⁃ "17 users mentioned they don't understand what to do after watching the first three lectures." Working with this set is already more pleasant, and you can even ask yourself, "What is the problem here, and what isn't?" and think about "Why is that?" (a separate extensive topic on root cause analysis). And, as you understand, collecting this data is also work and cannot be done in an evening. Next, try to understand the root causes of situations and design solutions for these root causes. Only after completing all this work can you talk about prioritization and planning. _____ During the call with the client, I conducted an exercise for him to load data on the tasks he listed, and we slightly rewrote them into the format of situations. Once we did that, the client experienced a wow-effect and understood what went wrong in the initial planning. He left to make adjustments, and I'll happily talk with him about prioritization and planning next time. _____ #productmanagement #mistakes #planning #roadmapping

I would appreciate advice about the mentoring platform. I've been mentoring other product managers for a couple of years, but still, I don't have a public mentor profile :) What platform would you recommend to develop a presence as a product manager mentor? I've been thinking about https://adplist.org, but I'm not sure about it. __ #productmanagement #mentoring

Could you share, if it's not too personal, how you deal with your "anxiety" at work? I'm especially interested if you're in a managerial role. In short, I work with a therapist and also with a coach on my work-related anxiety, particularly in product management and other professional interests, such as product design. I've decided to thoroughly break down the whole topic of anxiety because it takes a toll as a manager, especially when trying to advance in my career. It's practically only possible when facing regular burnout. I don't want to burn out. I want to pursue my goals at a manageable pace and gradually climb the career ladder. :) I'm currently in the second month (6 sessions with the therapist and 3 sessions with the coach), focusing specifically on work-related anxiety. The results are as follows: - It has become easier to be creative, like in photography and design. - Subjectively, anxiety has reduced by x2, at least. - There is significantly less fatigue from calls (which, as we know, can be overwhelming). - Overall, there's more enjoyment in the work. In my humble opinion, if the progress in addressing anxiety continues like this, in 3-6 months of work, my work-related anxiety will be significantly lower, and I'll be comfortable working with more complex challenges as a product manager. #productmanagement #stressmanagement

What courses from the UX Design specialization would I recommend to product managers? Specifically, there are three: 1. Foundations of User Experience (UX) Design 2. Start the UX Design Process: Empathize, Define, and Ideate 3. Conduct UX Research and Test Early Concepts 4. Build Wireframes and Low-Fidelity Prototypes And the rest are for those who are really passionate about diving into UX Design or are starting a career as a designer. Links are in the comments. #uxdesign #productmanagement #ux #uxresearch #uxr
