About the project:

The Baltimore Banner is a high profile well-funded startup that is supported by some of the top names in the media industry, including The Lenfest Institute, Mike Bloomberg and Stewart Bainum Jr. Solely focused on the Baltimore area, they are creating a new paradigm for digital-first, cross-channel local media. Their content will extend across web, mobile (app), radio (terrestrial and satellite) and video (TV and digital). Their vision is to be the leading provider of news and lifestyle content in the Baltimore area. This is one of the highest-profile news start-ups ever, recently featured on 60 Minutes, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic, among others.

​​The Baltimore Banner is looking for a forward-thinking technically savvy Data Engineer to help build Data Lake for building insights and predictability on customers. The position will be based out of The Baltimore Banner office in Baltimore City, MD. This is a highly impactful position in a high-growth environment fueled by Engineering and product leaders from leading organizations. The suitable person will be allowed to bring innovative ways to solve problems for the next generation of new organizations.

Responsibilities:

• Build domain model for the customer across disparate sources of data
• Build and manage data integration pipelines from disparate sources of data into Data Lake
• Build and manage Data Lake in AWS using AWS native services from ground up
• Collaborate and work closely with Analytics SME and business leader
• Translate business requirements into data pipelines & data models
• Data security & compliance (encryption, data masking, SSH tunnels, etc.)

Requirements:

• Ability to clearly articulate technical vision and technological considerations.
• Solid experience building data lake in AWS
• Good understanding of the different design patterns for a data lake and how to build things from the ground up
• Minimum 5 years of experience with some of the following skills and technologies:
  • Batch & streaming data pipelines (Spark, Beam, Kafka, Kinesis, etc.)
  • Workflow orchestration (Airflow, Dagster, Luigi, etc)
  • Data quality monitoring & observability
  • Data modeling (SQL, dbt, Spark)
  • REST, GraphQL & SOAP APIs
  • Data security & compliance (encryption, data masking, SSH tunnels, etc)
  • Experience in using Python for Data processing
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related engineering field or equivalent practical experience
• Readiness to with the overlap till 1pm - 2pm EST (10am - 11am PST)
